Strive for excellence

President's Corner

Hi Ladies!

Spring is coming right? I say that as it is pouring outside and the dog doesn't even want to go for a walk. While I can't wait to get outside, I am reminded that I have my health to be thankful for. I would like to send a special message to all of those who are carrying extra heavy weights on their shoulders right now! You are not alone! It feels like it gets overwhelming sometimes but as part of this club, you have friends that you can lean on! Please let us know if there is anything we can help you with.

Ladies, please send your well-wishes to the following club members (as they are shouldering more than their fair share in life right now):

  • Chris and Mark Bonney - Mark's cancer
  • Fran Herbert and her son Hank (and family) - Hank's heart attack
  • Sandi Traynor - mastectomy surgery

LO Reads:

A huge thank you to Chris Bonney for coordinating our volunteer efforts for the LO Reads dinner this year on Friday, February 26th.

and Debbie K. (not pictured)
Our ladies had a great time, decorating tables, taking tickets and handing out cupcakes to 275 participants at the Native American themed even based on the LO Reads book - Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher by Timothy Egan.  Participants (and volunteers) were treated to a traditional "stick cooked" salmon and other Native American prepared dishes.  LOWC provided the yummy cupcake dessert made by Beaverton Bakery.  Also, we saw amazing traditional Native American dancers representing 5 different tribes.  It was a fabulous community event!

Abby's Closet Prom Gown Giveaway:

On the weekend of April 2-3, 2016, Abby's Closet (a charity that LOWC has supported for many years with groups of volunteers) will provide thousands of prom dresses to girls from all over Oregon and even Washington.  While there are volunteer shifts running from March 31st through April 3rd and anyone is welcome to sign up for any shift, we are coordinating a specific day/time for a group of LOWC ladies to volunteer.  If you'd like to join the group of LOWC ladies who will likely carpool to the Oregon Convention Center please use the following website information to register.  Sign up for Saturday April 2nd the 10:45am to 2pm shift as a "Personal Shopper" with Salon "B" and we'll all be together.  There are currently 38 more volunteer positions available at that time, but it will fill up quickly, so sign up early if you'd like to do it with the LOWC group!

A Baby Shower for Amanda Quinn:

Before the start of our March board meeting, the Board members had a baby shower for our LOWC Philanthropy Chair, Amanda Quinn.  Thanks to all who contributed to the shower gifts.
Amanda was thrilled! - "Bryan and I want to thank you all from our very souls for the surprise shower and gifts!  The cupcakes were amazing and so was the tortilla soup (did you know it's my favorite??).  We are very happy to be a part of such a wonderful group.  We are thrilled with the high chair, Boppy, Boppy cover, adorable onesies, and the sippie cup!  Too soon she will be using that particular item, I'm sure!"

Amanda and Bryan are due just days before the Lake Run.  We look forward to meeting their new baby girl, Daenerys.

Philanthropy Update

Hello everyone!  I hope you all are having a great year so far! We are, and I have a couple of things to share with you!

Grants:
The grant application is now available online!  If you know of an organization looking for grants, please feel free to direct them to our website.  There they'll find our requirements and a downloadable MS Word document they can fill out and email back to Amanda Quinn.  We have yet to choose our smaller charities for this fiscal year, they have until April 15th to fill out an application and get it back to us!

Scholarships:
The 2016 scholarship application is now available online!  Big thanks to Debbie and Kim for their help!  If you know of a high school senior who has shown outstanding community service, please direct them to our website!  From there they'll find the requirements and a downloadable MS Word document to fill out and email to Scholarships.  Applications are due April 1st!

Thanks everyone for your support as my husband and I prepare for our first child in May!  I will likely be missing the Lake Run but will try to stop by if I can!

Thank you!

10th and Final
Champions for Children Luncheon

The annual Champions for Children Luncheon has been a key fundraiser for the past 10 years, but Children's Center has decided to bid a bittersweet farewell to this event to allow for expansion of the Healing Garden Gala in September. We hope you'll attend this final luncheon to offer your support (over a pleasant lunch and delicious cakes) and to stand united in protecting our vulnerable children. If you aren't able to attend the luncheon, please look for details on the Gala as September approaches.

There is no cost for you to attend the luncheon, however, this is a fundraising event, so please remember to bring your checkbooks or credit cards! Children’s Center is hoping to sign up more monthly champions. This is a great way to budget your giving throughout the year. The luncheon is always touching and informative, PLUS the raffle baskets are outstanding!

Date: Wednesday, May 11, 2016
Time: 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

(Reception and Raffle followed by a program)
Location: The Oregon Golf Club

Sponsorship Opportunities:
If you know an individual or business owner who would like to sponsor a table, please share details about this event. Table sponsorships are $500 for individuals, and $1,000 for businesses. If you would like more information, please contact Development and Communications Coordinator Steve Baldwin
, or call 503-655-7725. Your table sponsorship reserves a table for 10 of your guests. However, you are not required to fill a table and if you prefer, Children's Center can fill your table.

Volunteers needed:

Children's Center is seeking volunteers to assist on the day of the Luncheon. If you would like to volunteer your time to make this final luncheon a success, please contact Children's Center Volunteer Coordinator, Lori Malone or call 503-655-7725.

Children's Center, a 501c3 non-profit organization, is Clackamas County's sole agency providing medical assessments, forensic interviews and family support services to children who are suspected victims of child abuse and neglect. The organization was founded in 2002. For more information, please visit the Children's Center Website.
