A note from the President...

Hi Ladies!  As fall is finally here and we head into the holiday season, it is a good time to remind ourselves of all of the positive forces in our lives.  We have chosen to give freely of our time to the Lake Oswego Women's Club, in support of many women and children in surrounding communities, who don't have as many positive forces in theirs.  As we continue through our fundraising year and have fun at our social events, let's be proud of the work we are doing and the people we support with our efforts.  While we almost never see them face to face, it is nice to know that their holidays will be brighter because we have chosen to act.

Two Month Calendar:
Nov 15th – Potluck/brunch at Oswego Pointe Condos at 11:30am
Dec 3rd – Board meeting at Fran's home at 6:30pm
Dec 10th – NO book club meeting
Dec 12th – LOWC Holiday Party at 7pm at Holiday Inn Express (Get your tickets today! More Information below!)
Jan 7th - Board meeting at Jane's home at 6:30pm
Jan 14th - Book club meeting at Lauren's home at 7pm

New Vice President & Membership Chair

The board has approved Fran Herbert as our new Vice President and Debbie Kutnyak as Membership Chair.  If you see either of these ladies, pat them on the back for stepping up!  We are going to keep Fran's roll, as Vice President, to a minimum so that she can focus on the Lake Run.  Debbie will continue with her role as Secretary as well as interact and mentor the Provisionals to have a successful year with LOWC.  We are thrilled to have these spots filled!  Congratulations and Thanks to Fran Herbert and Debbie Kutynak!

Join us for the LOWC Holiday Party!
Bring a significant other or guest and help us celebrate the season in "Holiday Cocktail" attire at the Holiday Inn Express, Bridgeport Room (at I-5 & Carman Dr.) on Saturday December 12th from 7- 10pm.  The $40/person ticket price includes a heavy appetizer dinner, dessert, beer/wine, coffee, tea, water, our bartender and gratuity!  We'll do a "Funny White Elephant" gift exchange at the Holiday Party too! (It's optional but fun!).  If you bring a funny gift, please don't spend more than $20).   Get ready for surprise entertainment too!

Your payment is your RSVP!  You can mail a check with 'Holiday Party' in the memo line to PO Box 1434, Lake Oswego, OR 97035.  We will need to give the caterer our head count by December 5th so payments should be received no later than December 4th.  Thank you!

Please feel free to print and share the invitation below!

We will have a private entrance for this event, so please park in the "far back" parking spaces (lower level of the parking lot as you enter the hotel parking lot area) and look for the LOWC sign next to our entrance!  If you have any questions, contact Lisa Rainer.  See you at the Holiday Party!

Jewelry Making for Abby's Closet

Thanks to all of the ladies who showed up for our Abby's Closet "work party"!  The team was able to package up 90 pieces of jewelry to be donated to Abby's Closet for their annual prom dress and accessories give away next Spring.  Nice work ladies!!

Annual Potluck Brunch Meeting
Sunday, November 15th at 11:30am we had our Annual Potluck Brunch.  All active members brought a delicious food dish to share and provisionals (new) members brought toiletry donations for the non-food pantry hosted by Love, Inc.  There was a short/casual meeting to bring people up to date with what is happening in the club!  We also were able to:

- Purchase tickets to the Holiday Party
- Purchase bottles from our Paris-themed "wine wall"

Karen Schneider and Annie Arkebauer won gift cards to Chuck's Coffee and Olive Garden in a door prize.  Congratulations Karen and Annie!

Save the date for the LO Reads Dinner Event

As part of our mission to support community events, Lake Oswego Women's Club has, for many years, supported the LO Reads Event.  This year, since they will not be holding the "dessert" event, we will be participating in the LO Reads Dinner.  It will be held on February 26th at 6pm at the old Palisades Elementary School on Greentree Rd.  Mark your calendar now for a fun evening of volunteering and community service.  Our jobs will be to help with set-up, decorations, welcoming, ticket collection, possibly food service and clean-up.  We will wear some kind of a matching 'uniform' and be donning our LOWC aprons.  A sign-up sheet and more information will follow in the coming months!

Looking for a book to read between now and then?  Try the native american themed LO Reads' pick for 2016 and our LOWC book club read for February - Timothy Egan's Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher.

10. Tell us a favorite recipe you like to prepare and share it with us.

My favorite recipe would be a South Indian dish called Dosa.  It includes a white rice/lentil thin crepe style pancake (stuffed with potato/onion dry curry) that you can dip in a lentil soup with vegetables and topped with coconut chutney.

Ingredients:
Dosa shell:
1 1/2 cups rice
1/2 cup urad dal
salt to taste
Oil

Masala Filling:
2 large potatoes (chopped)
1 medium onion (chopped)
1/2 teaspoon yellow split peas
1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1-2 green chili (chopped)
1 tablespoon oil
salt to taste

Preparation:
Dosa shell
  • Separately soak rice and urad dal at least 6 hours or overnight in water.
  • Grind to a consistency of paste.
  • Mix together, add salt with water to make batter.
  • Leave at room temperature overnight.
  • Mix onions and chilies to the thin batter.
  • Heat pan or griddle with little ghee (Indian butter) or oil.
  • Spread the mix on pan in circular motion to make thin Dosa (like a pancake).  Cook on both sides like you would a pancake.
Masala Filling (Spicy Filling):
  • Heat oil. Add mustard seeds, peas, onions and spices.
  • Fry for about 5 minutes on medium heat or/until onions turn golden brown in color.
  • Add potatoes and cook some more.  This is the filling for the Dosa.
  • Put the filling inside the Dosa and roll up.
  • Serve hot with coconut chutney.

COCONUT CHUTNEY RECIPE

Ingredients:
1 fresh coconut (grated)
3 fresh green chilies or as per taste
2 tbsp cilantro or coriander leaves (chopped)
1 tbsp lemon or lime juice
1 tbsp split peas (roasted)
3/4 cup plain yogurt
Salt To Taste
  • Grind coarsely all the ingredients in a blender and serve.
