Heading to the Finish Line

IT'S ALMOST HERE!!

LAKE RUN 2014  - SATURDAY MAY 10TH

The success of the 2014 Lake Run depends on the commitment of the LOWC members!  Please be sure to volunteer and be a part of the success!

We need everyone to sign up to volunteer!  There are more than enough opportunities still left! We need more volunteers than we have active members. So, go to lowomensclub.org, log in and click to volunteer for any open spot for the Lake Run. It's super easy! Got friends and family that would like to help out...Awesome! As long as they are 18 years or older, you can log in and sign up for them. After you have signed them up, send me a quick email at LRVolunteerCoordinator@lowomensclub.org letting me know who you signed up.  Thank you!!

If you are not able to volunteer on the day of the race you must find a replacement.  We must have volunteers in order to have the Lake Run, which is our single fundraiser.  If you have a replacement, go to the LO Womens Club website and register your substitute, then email me telling me who is taking your place so that I can cross you off the list.

Thanks everyone for stepping up!

What time is the 10K?  8:00 AM

What time is the 5K?  8:15 AM

Why is it now at 5th Street?  Again, the race is shorter this year.

Is the start and finish in the same place for the 5K?  Yes

What time is the Kids Dash?  10:30 AM

Where is the Kids Dash?  The start of the Kids Dash is under the blue and white balloon arch at Evergreen and 2nd.

What time is the awards announcement?  11:00 AM

Where are the porta-potties?  There are six on lower Millennium Plaza near State Street and seven on Evergreen Street near the roundabout at 1st Street.

I didn’t get a shirt at packet pick up because I just registered this week.  Can I get a shirt?  Yes, after the races are over.  Go to the registration tent, show the volunteers your bib, pick up your shirt while supplies last.  Or, you can purchase a shirt at the Sports U booth.

Where can I see my race time?  At the registration tent.  You can look up your results on the computer terminals provided by Accustat Timing.

Is there a race photographer?  Yes, the information for Finish Shots will be on the back of your bib.

If you are volunteering at the event on Millennium Plaza, please go to the LOWC booth first.  Check in with Kris Coder, the volunteer coordinator.  If you are a course monitor, you will need to check out a vest and check it back in to Kris.

Be sure to wear any LOWC apparel that you own.  If you don’t own club apparel, you can purchase a shirt with the club logo at the Sports U booth next to the registration tent.

See you at the Lake Run!!

Lake Run Sponsorship - A Huge Success!

Sponsorship for this year's Lake Run has concluded.  We have received checks totalling $21,400 from our sponsors.

Please take a moment to say "Hello" to our sponsors at their booths during the Lake Run and thank them for their contributions.  We would love to have them all come back next year!  We have asked the sponsors to provide lots of freebies/hand-outs, maybe even some raffle prizes, so encourage people to visit the booths!  Also, we'll have a sign-up sheet at the Lake Run, so if you happen to talk with anyone that is interested in being a sponsor for next year, please send them to the LOWC tent, or make sure you get their information and add it to the sign-up sheet yourself.

WE'LL SEE YOU AT THE LAKE RUN!

LOWC Members Attend Champions for Children Luncheon

The Champions for Children luncheon benefiting Children’s Center was held on Wednesday, May 30 at Oregon Golf Club. It was a lovely event that touched the hearts and minds of those in attendance.

Lake Oswego Women’s Club stepped up to sponsor a table (this was included in the 2013-2014 LOWC budget). My husband, Tom, and I also sponsored a table to invite personal friends, along with any LOWC “overflow” at our table. I'm happy to report that 10 LOWC members responded to the club-wide invitation! In addition, some past and present LOWC members were scattered throughout the venue. We managed to gather together for a group photo!

Kenny Anderson, former NBA player, Portland Trail Blazer, and child abuse advocate was the guest speaker. Kenny bravely told his story to a roomful of strangers and it reminded guests of the large number of adults who cope daily with the legacy of abuse they suffered as children. I wish that no child was ever abused in any way, but that is not the reality of our world or our community.  I am so glad Children's Center is there for those children and families who need their services. Children's Center truly is, "A Place Where Healing Begins."

As Children’s Center Liaison, I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to all LOWC members who attended this fund-raiser and generously donated to this fabulous organization!

Children's Center still needs support! If you'd like to know more about the ways you can help this organization with their important work, please visit their website.

Children's Center Luncheon Raises $70,000 for Abused Children

(Press Release - May 8, 2014)
Children's Center raised critical funding and educated hundreds of guests when it hosted its eighth-annual Champions for Children Luncheon on Wednesday, April 30th.

The luncheon, held at The Oregon Golf Club, drew a crowd of more than 300 people and raised more than $70,000 to support the Center's services for abused and neglected children. Airstream Adventures Northwest was the Platinum Level sponsor.

“The eighth-annual Champions for Children Luncheon gave guests an opportunity to learn about their power to shine a light on child abuse in our community,” said Children’s Center Executive Director Barbara Peschiera. “Kids need champions to help open the door to healing. With the continued support of our community, we can help vulnerable children heal.”

Tracy Barry, KGW Northwest NewsChannel 8, emceed the afternoon’s program, which included a speech by former NBA player and abuse survivor Kenny Anderson. Lori Sobelson of Bob’s Red Mill and Barbara Peschiera also gave remarks. Gold level sponsors were Structured Communications and NW Natural.

“I wanted to be a voice for and help other victims of child abuse who are holding in their pain,” Anderson said of his presentation. “If we can catch abuse earlier, people can heal and lead productive lives. Sharing my story with a room full of supportive adults, released a lot of pain for me too.”

As Clackamas County's sole agency providing medical evaluations, forensic interviews and family support services to children who are suspected victims of child abuse and neglect, Children’s Center plays a vital role in ending the trauma of abuse for local children. Children of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds are referred to Children’s Center for suspicion of abuse. Visit www.childrenscenter.cc for more information.

Founded in 2002, Children's Center, a 501c3 non-profit organization, is Clackamas County's sole agency providing medical assessments, forensic interviews and family support services to children who are suspected to be victims of child abuse and neglect. Learn more at www.childrenscenter.cc.

Lake Oswego Arts Festival - Volunteer!

On June 20th, 21st and 22nd  Lake Oswego will once again host the Lake Oswego Arts Festival. The Festival involves three days of exhibits of wonderful works of art, workshops to learn techniques, Children's theater performances and exhibitors with their for-sale art work.

LOWC has been asked if we would like to supply volunteers for this event. We are specifically encouraged to be Hospitality Volunteers. Volunteers work a 3 hour shift at Lakewood Center by welcoming the community to the Festival, handing out the Festival brochure and suggesting a $5 per person donation. This is an excellent opportunity for LOWC to have a visible presence at a well attended community event.

If you would like to volunteer as a representative of LOWC, please email zarina.khorasanee@wellsfargo.com. She is coordinating "corporate" volunteers for Hospitality and will let you know which shifts need to be filled.

If you have any questions about this opportunity please feel free to contact Arts Festival Steering Committee and LOWC member, Garlinn Story at garstory@gmail.com.

LOWC donated jewelry to Abby's Closet

Several members of LOWC made jewelry from the materials and jewelry making instructions provided by Fran Herbert and donated it to Abby's Closet.  Here's a picture of the many earrings, necklaces and bracelets we made to go with the prom dresses for Abby's Closet.  Look for emails if you want to contribute. We are planning to donate a 100 pieces next year!

Philanthropy Committee Update

Several members of the Philanthropy Committee interviewed the Outstanding Community Scholarship applicants on April 9th and 10th.  These graduating seniors have already accomplished amazing things in their young lives and it was a true pleasure to meet them and to discuss their excellent applications.  Four applicants were selected and they will be presented with their award certificate at their respective high schools' awards ceremonies.

Since we all represent the LOWC, it is important that our membership be aware of the fact that one of the high schools - Lakeridge- had no applications submitted.   All of the local schools were provided the scholarship information well in advance and asked to publicize the application, post it on their websites and to encourage their seniors to apply.  We have followed up with Lakeridge and confirmed that the counseling office did their own due diligence and posted the information and encouraged student participation.

When the scholarship recipients are publicized in the local paper, LOWC members should feel comfortable in explaining that the same process was followed with each of the high schools and  regrettably we received no applications from Lakeridge.

Thanks goes to our committee for their work on the Scholarship process and to the selection of four outstanding recipients.

Audrey Sightings in LO!

Audrey enjoyed attending her first board meeting at Lisa Rainer's home and she thought you all looked beautiful in your pearls!

She even made a guest appearance at the Oswego Grill and she enjoyed meeting Sharon, Joni and Lisa!

LOWC members have noticed that Audrey is a male magnet ~ she especially loves guys in pearls! Glen, Garlinn, Lisa and Janet were quite amused.

Audrey thought Jim and Mark were handsome but she commented that they really should have worn tuxedos because she felt overdressed!

A Favorite Recipe: Vegan Chocolate Mousse

Dairy and I don't get along...but I can't live without chocolate...so I found an amazing Vegan Chocolate Mousse recipe:

1+ cups of vegan semi-sweet chocolate chips - melted
(I use a microwave to melt the chips)
1/2 cup nondairy milk
1/3 cup sugar
1 package non-refrigerated boxed silken tofu (firm or extra firm)
(I use lite to save calories)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Blend together till smooth, pour into individual cups and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Thank you Jackie, for sharing this delicious recipe and letting us get to know you better!
