Spring is in the Air

Time to stand up and be counted!  Participate! Volunteer!

Yes, I'm talking to all of you!  To make this club work, we need everyone! In particular, our Lake Run can not happen without you!

And that is not just a slogan - seriously, unless every course monitor post is manned, the race will not start -The Lake Oswego Police Department MUST stop it for safety issues.  So please, everyone, login, sign up for a course monitor position NOW! If you have signed up for "something else" please either add a course monitor post as an additional shift (thank you!!!) or replace your existing spot with a course monitor spot. The race will not happen without all of those positions filled.

And now that I have your attention - please put some serious consideration into what role you want to take next year.

We turn 40 at the end of this year and will celebrate our 40 years in grand style - hopefully throughout the 2014-2015 year.  So, is a board position in your future? What committee do you want to contribute to? And there are several non-board positions that are available - historian, directory, to name a few. Look in your directory for a complete list of the positions available - committees and board/non-board positions are all listed. I know that there are a few openings on the board that have not yet been filled. If you want more information about any of these wonderful opportunities, feel free to contact the current position holder or any of the nominating committee members: DeLoris Scherschligt, Minita Feldsien, Janet Alexander, Garlinn Story, Sheri Rathbun, Chris Bonney.

Committee assignments start being made at the May general meeting after we vote on our new board!!

2013-2014 President

Calling all volunteers! We need you!!

All LOWC members MUST sign up to volunteer at the 38th annual lake run!

We have to have all course monitor positions filled or the race will not happen.  The Lake Oswego Police Department will delay the races or call it off if we do not have a person in every course monitor position.  Please go to the website and sign up for your spot.  As we get closer to May, the volunteer coordinator will begin assigning members who have not signed up to a course monitor position.  If your spouse or adult child is able to volunteer, we would really appreciate the help and we will assign them a spot near your assigned position.  Thank you!

Distribute Lake Run Notices

All members of the LOWC are invited to help with distributing Lake Run notices!

Volunteers are needed for Saturday, May 3rd to walk the 10K and 5K routes leaving notices on the doors of residents who will be affected by the road closure in their neighborhood due to the Lake Run.  Please contact Kris Coder at LRVolunteerCoordinator@lowomensclub.org to volunteer for the neighborhood alert walk.  Pauline Decker will be meeting with volunteers on Saturday, May 3rd to hand out materials for the neighborhood alert posting.  You can leave the notices at your convenience sometime over the weekend.  Volunteers will be notified the time and location of the meeting to pick up materials.  This is a good activity for spouses to go for a walk together or for your children to help get involved in volunteering.

What's Happening in the Philanthropy Committee?

The Philanthropy Committee is organizing the Outstanding Community Service Scholarship interviews for mid April.  We are excited to meet and interview another group of amazing seniors from our local high schools and we look forward to the daunting task of narrowing the group to a few selected recipients.  Thanks go to Kathleen Amorose and Karen Schneider for managing the application site, Jessica Clark-Root for providing an interview site and reviewing interview questions and Jackie Medecki for scheduling interviews.

Part of the proceeds from Lake Run will fund our Scholarships and therefore the success of that community event is so important to help fund the work LOWC does for our selected charities and for those selected to receive a scholarship.

Talks with Clackamas Women's Services are hopefully resulting in a team of their employees attending and participating in Lake Run. They would like to support this event, which will directly help their organization.  LOWC also has the opportunity to perhaps utilize volunteers from CWS to help us on the day of the race.  It is looking like it will be a "team effort" which will be a wonderful collaboration.

LOWC members can support our charities in several ways:  sign up for the luncheon on April 30th for Children's Center, attend the Derby Party for CASA on May 3rd and welcome and support any runners from Clackamas Women's Services who are represented at Lake Run.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."  Margaret Mead

We are all doing our part to support students and organizations who bring about beneficial changes for women and children affected by abuse and neglect and for the communities in which they live - change is occurring because of our efforts.

AUDREY SIGHTINGS

Audrey is looking forward to meeting all of you at The Oswego Grill on April 9th at 5 pm. Look for her in the main dining room as The Grill has graciously offered to let us have a big table in there for Happy Hour so we have more room to sit.

Audrey is our new LOWC fashion ambassador and will be seen at various locations in LO. She wanted to visit some of our fabulous businesses that support our club. Besides, she loves going to Happy Hours in her LBD, chatting with club members and being seen in LO! She surprized the nominating committee at Manzana’s and created quite the stir at the bar! Be watching for Audrey around town the next few months.

                        Breakfast at Tiffany’s Trivia

Most of us know that Truman Capote wrote the book Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the theme song Moon River was written by Henry Mancini who composed the song for Hepburn’s vocal register.
But here are a few frivolous facts from the movie that you may not remember. But, of course, you will want to remember these facts for the next Happy Hour at Oswego Grill on April 9th at
5PM and at the General Meetings so you can win an “Audrey Prize” and Audrey wants to have you in her photo shoots!

Audrey Hepburn played Holly Golightly in the movie and her couch was an actual bathtub split in half and covered with cushions.

The cat who played “Cat,” was called Orangey, won an award for his work in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and most sources say that nine cats were used to film the cat’s role.

The delightful scene where Paul and Holly attempt to have a Cracker Jack ring engraved at Tiffany’s caused the production crew quite a task. Apparently, they crew had to open 200 boxes of Cracker Jacks before finding a ring. The toy-du-jour was a whistle.
