Gearing up for Lake Run

Ladies, the Lake Run committee is working fast and furious putting our biggest money making event of the year together. They need your help with the following:
1) Lake Run Volunteer Shift
2) Lake Run PR
If you know a business that would be willing to hang our Lake Run Poster, please come to the General Meeting on Thursday and/or contact the PR committee at PR@lowomensclub.org to arrange to get a poster from them or give them the name and contact at the business. They'd like to get at least 100 posters hung in the next few weeks and any help our LOWC members can give them would be great! Again, if you frequent gyms, grocery stores, coffee shops etc. and you know they would be willing to post something, you can help!

3) Know anyone that would like to sponsor a booth at the Lake Run? Sponsorship for the Lake Run is at nearly $20,000, thanks to our Sponsorship Chair Toniya Villalobos! We are still accepting sponsors and still have a few spaces available for booth sponsors. If you know a business that would like to be in front of a minimum of 3000 people at Millennium Plaza Park on race day…please have them contact sponsorship@lowomensclub.org as soon as possible.
4) Thank our Sponsors!Do you visit or know any of these places? Tell them we really appreciate their support!!

We have a great volunteer opportunity to volunteer handing out pinwheels at our Child Abuse Prevention kiosk in Clackamas Town Center. On the Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (except Easter) in April, we will have multiple two hour shifts for groups of three volunteers. This is a great volunteer opportunity for families and friends to get involved!
The Champions for Children Luncheon is on Wednesday, April 30th. The reception and raffle are from 11 to 12, lunch and program from 12 to 1. Tracy Barry will once again grace us with her presence as our special guest, and Kenny Anderson, former NBA player, Trail Blazer, and child abuse advocate is our featured speaker. RSVP to andrew@childrenscenter.cc or call 503-655-7725. Information can also be found online.

Scottie, Denise, Heather and Diane all closed their eyes as little blue boxes with white bows were placed in their hands at our first Fashion Show Committee meeting and the theme Breakfast at Tiffany's was revealed for our Fashion Show Luncheon. No, they didn’t get diamonds in the blue boxes but turquoise candy was inside. So get out that LBD along with your biggest sunglasses and polish those pearls for our September 25th Fashion Show.
When Truman Capote wrote Breakfast at Tiffany's and he wanted Marilyn Monroe for the lead but she dropped out because she thought a call-girl character might damage her image. Seriously, I find that
Holly was a controversial character as one of the first "party girls" on film and she shocked conservative audiences in the sixties. She was a drinker and a seductress but Paris Hilton and Miley Cyrus could certainly learn a few things about elegance from Audrey. Carrie Bradshaw in Sex In the City probably would have liked Holly Golighty’s style!
2014 Fashion Show - Theme Revealed
Imagine gliding elegantly down the staircase at Oswego Lake Country Club in your little black dress, several strands of pearls glistening, raising your oversize sunglasses…..you smile as you gaze at all those little Blue Boxes with white bows thinking of the line from the movie: "It calms me down right away, the quietness and proud look of it..." Moon River is softly playing and you realize it is Breakfast at Tiffany's... While you wait for the big date, I thought you might enjoy a few movie facts. Did I forget to mention, there will be prizes if you read this blog and can remember a few facts and attend the Happy Hour at 5 pm on April 9th at Oswego Grill. Naturally, the prizes will be turquoise. Sorry, I will not be giving away any diamond rings in Tiffany boxes - LOL!
Fashion Frivolity Facts:

hard to believe! Audrey Hepburn was very self-conscious playing Holly Golightly because she knew Capote wanted Marilyn.

Hepburn's iconic glasses were not Ray-Bans but they are Manhattans designed by Oliver Goldsmith and you can purchase a pair for a mere $440.00. Audrey probably could have bought several pairs since she was paid
$750,000 for making the film which is equivalent to $ 5.9 million today.

Bunco, Anyone?
Ladies, almost last call to see if we have enough ladies for a Bunco Group. We need at least 7 people who will host at least 1 time this year. We do not play in December. It's an easy game and you do not need to know how to play to join. It's mostly about socializing and having fun. So if you think you can make it on a somewhat regular basis, please let me know. I already have a list going, so if you have not already responded please do so. I know how busy everyone is, and we may not get enough people to play. I am changing the date (due to some conflict) to the 2nd Wed of each month at 6:30 pm. Let me know if this works for you or is something you would like to do.
I will send out one more reminder. If we do not have enough participants at that time, we will not play. This is open to everyone, if you have a friend who might like to play, please forward it to them, they are welcome to join.
Thank you! If you have any questions or would like to join, please send an email to jonipowelldiva@gmail.com

Get to know Karen Norgaard
Yes, to my very adorable husband, Steve Norgaard. We met through our mutual love of rowing. We both rowed for our college crew team and met at a regatta several years after graduating.
Do you have children?
We have two boys -- Adam, who is 15, and a sophomore at OES, and 13-year-old Charlie, a 7th grader, also at OES.
What cities/states have you lived in (in order if more than one)?
I was born in Newport, R.I., then moved to Oslo, Norway for a few years. Moved back and forth from Virginia and California a few times, before moving to Rome when I was 14, followed by three years in Naples and then to Italy for high school. Moved back to California for college and lived in Palo Alto for several years. Got married and moved to Dublin, Ireland where I had my first baby, then to England for two more years and another baby. Finally, back to Palo Alto for two years before settling in Lake Oswego. After a short relocation to Shanghai in 2011, I'm exhausted, and done with moving for awhile.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book of all time is, 'The Good Earth' by Pearl S. Buck.

Sticky Toffee Pudding
Super scrumptious, incredibly easy dessert I learned to make in England.
INGREDIENTS:
Pudding:
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 cup pitted dates
1-1/4 cups boiling water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
Toffee sauce:
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 cup packed light brown sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Pudding: Butter a 10-inch square baking dish. Sift the flour and baking powder onto a sheet of waxed paper. Chop the dates fine. Place in a small bowl and add the boiling water and baking soda; set aside. In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixture until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla; beat until blended. Gradually beat in the flour mixture. Add the date mixture to the batter and fold until blended with a rubber spatula. Pour into the prepared baking dish. Bake until pudding is set and firm on top, about 35 minutes. Remove from oven to a wire rack.
Toffee Sauce: Combine the butter, heavy cream and brown sugar in a small heavy saucepan; heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil gently over medium low heat until mixture is thickened, about 8 minutes. Preheat broiler.
Spoon about 1/3 cup of the sauce over the pudding. Spread evenly on top. Place pudding under the broiler until the topping is bubbly, about 1 minute. Drizzle with toffee sauce and top with a spoonful of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
