Go out there and do some good!
A Few Volunteers Still Needed
LOWC is hosting the Community dessert buffet on Thursday, February 13th at the LO High School Cafeteria. We could use a few more helping hands to arrive (now we can start at 4:30 pm) but no later than 5:00 pm to help set up the desserts, banner, etc. The Community will be allowed to participate at 6:00 pm and then adjourn to the lecture which begins at 7:00 pm. We will have to clean-up the area and then are invited to attend the lecture.
Hope you will consider helping our Club have a visible presence of LOWC at this event.
Please respond to philanthropy@lowomensclub.org to volunteer!
Thank you!

Calling all Volunteers!
The Lake Run will be here before you know it. Banners and posters are being printed. Ads are being run. The runner registration is alive - and I even know a few friends that have already signed up! What makes this race all possible? YOU! Please watch for and sign up for your volunteer positions as soon as possible. Sign up for two slots if you can. Invite friends and family to help out. And remember, it is your duty to fill a volunteer shift. If you can't be there, then you are required to find a replacement. We need more than our membership (active and provisional members) to fill in all the slots, so each of you really count!
And remember, the earlier you sign up, the more choices you will have to pick your volunteer position!
Thank you from the Sponsorship committee
The week of January 20th the sponsorship committee mailed about 400 letters to local area businesses asking for sponsors for the upcoming Lake Run. We want to send a special thank you to Johanna McCormick, Glen Brivic, Garlinn Story and Denise Smith along with all of you that helped stuff and seal envelopes at our last general meeting. The many hands made for light work and we have already had 4 companies offer to be sponsors since the mailing so yeah!! We couldn't have done it without all of you!! Thank you so much!! Come to the February 20th general meeting and get all the details on this year's sponsors for the Lake Run!

Please Don't Make Me Talk About Money
Please Don't Make Me Talk About Money
“The hardest thing to understand in the world is the income tax.” -Albert Einstein.
It is the start of everyone’s favorite time of year to think about money, tax season. As the LOWC treasurer, it is vital that I keep accurate and transparent records for our operating and philanthropic income and expenses so that the LOWC maintains a non-profit status. Lucky for me, an accountant takes care of the taxes.
In addition to my basic duties of picking up mail, reconciling bank statements, making deposits, paying bills and generating the treasurer’s report, I am also here to help club members and you can help me.
Have a question about an expense or deposit? Ask the Treasurer.
The LOWC utilizes fantastic modern bookkeeping with Quickbooks online. I have LOWC data access at my fingertips between three laptops, a smart phone and a tablet. If you ask me a question about a transaction, I can quickly find an answer. I can also generate awesome reports.
Treasurer duties include providing ready access to three years of taxes, deposits, expenses, bank statements, contracts, and treasurer’s reports. This makes an excellent footrest, but I can also scan and email invoices to assist in event planning.
In my treasure of documents, I have forms and more forms, expense reimbursement forms, cash box reconciliation forms and W9 forms. You name it. I also have two cash boxes for events and Paypal dongles to accept credit card transactions.
How do I get reimbursed for an expense incurred on behalf of the club?
- Print a copy of the expense reimbursement form found online at http://www.lowomensclub.org/Resources/Documents/MemberExpenseReimbursementForm.pdf (You must be signed in to access the member’s only section of the website.)
- Note that another LOWC member such as a committee chairwoman must approve the expense.
- Please submit this form with the receipts to the Treasurer within 30 days of expense for reimbursement.
- Mail to the Treasurer at the LOWC PO Box.
- I will send you a check!
Tip: The expense reimbursement form is getting an overhaul to allow multiple reimbursements. Check back to the http://www.lowomensclub.org/memberdocs (Members | Docs and Links) directory for future updates.
How do I document and transfer income to the Treasurer?
At events please keep careful documentation especially for cash collections. In order to keep accurate records, I must classify all income. If you have multiple sources of similar income, such as the raffles at the Fashion Show, I can classify each separately to generate detailed reports.
Same rule applies when collecting payments via Paypal. For example, at the Fashion Show we collected member dues, luncheon tickets and raffle ticket income via Paypal. The ladies provided me a detailed list of the transactions.
If you write a check, document the event in the memo field. For social events such as the holiday party, the event planner collects and documents the income first, but I sometimes receive checks sent directly to the PO Box.
If you have LOWC money to deposit, contact me at
Treasurer@lowomensclub.org. We will coordinate a time to meet or checks can be mailed to the Treasurer at the LOWC PO Box.I can’t compete with the fascinating Fashion Show topics, but money can be fun too. Stay tuned for QuickBooks Profit & Loss Reports Demystified or some other entertaining topic.

Fashion - Be an “IT” Lady
Fashion - Be an “IT” Lady
As the various shades of grey days settle in our world, a yearning for spring surfaces but you do not have to wait until April for a hint of springtime. According to Pantone, the global authority on color standards, the “It” color for 2014 will be radiant orchid. Pantone describes it "as an enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones. Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm". It is the personification of romance, yet it emits a powerful feminine punch while still being chic and captivating.
Wouldn’t you just love to be an “IT Lady” at Tucci’s on February 12th anytime from 5-8? Just play with color and wear a shade of Radiant Orchid nail polish, lipstick, eye shadow or clothes. You just might win a bottle of radiant orchid nail polish! All of you sustainers and actives that have given so very much over the years to LOWC, it is time you come and just have fun with a group of lovely ladies. We miss seeing you and would love to share an evening of fashion frivolity. Call up another club member to join you!Don’t forget to read the past Fashion Blogs because prizes await if you know some of the information!

ITALIAN MEATBALL SOUP
(My favorite soup on a rainy night!)
INGREDIENTS:
Tiny Meatballs:
1 ½ pounds of
Mild Italian Sausage (I like lots of baby meatballs)
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 cup bread crumbs (plain or seasoned)
3 teaspoons fennel seeds, crushed or
chopped
1 Tablespoon fresh Italian parsley, minced
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried sage leaves
2 cloves garlic, finely minced
2 medium carrots, finely chopped
1 celery stalk, finely chopped
8 cups chicken stock
1 bay leaf
8 ounces orzo pasta, cooked
2 cups spinach, roughly chopped
1/3 cup shredded parmesan cheese
DIRECTIONS:
1. Mix meatball ingredients together and roll into small meatballs. It should be about the size of a marble. (If forming the meatball is difficult, cover and refrigerate first.)
2. In a medium pan, cook orzo al dente, according to the package directions, drain and set aside.
3. Prep the vegetables.
4. In a large pot, saute onion, thyme and sage in olive oil. When the onion starts to turn a golden color; add garlic, carrot, celery and cook for about 5 minutes stirring occasionally. Set the vegetable mixture aside on a plate.
5. In the same pot add all the meatballs and cook for 2-3 minutes before stirring (this will keep them from breaking). Gently toss with a rubber spatula to brown on all sides.
6. Add reserved vegetables, chicken stock, and bay leaf. Simmer gently, (do not boil) until vegetables are tender and meatballs are cooked through.
7. Add cooked orzo and spinach, stir together. (Adding spinach right before serving will help it maintain its rich green color).
