President’s Letter
Believe it or not, this is my last President's letter!  I will soon be turning the group over to the capable hands of the 2012-2013 board, in which I have the utmost confidence to lead us into the future.
As I reflect back on the past year, I know that there were ups and downs, but I hope more of the former!  This past year has been fantastic, and I have been so honored to lead this group of amazing women.  I couldn't have done it without the help of my board, and to all of you I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
As I look to the future, I know that there will be challenges ahead, especially in this economy, but I also know that there will be a lot of great times.  Remember that we are an all-volunteer group, and only with ALL of our members' help and involvement can we make the Club a success.
As I now sign off for the last time as your president, I want to thank all of you for your confidence in me, and for giving me this amazing opportunity.  It has been my honor and my pleasure.

May 17 General Meeting

Your vote counts!
The May meeting is a voting meeting, so we need to have a big turnout!  This meeting includes a raffle and we’ll be awarding some nice prizes, in addition to the usual wine and appetizers!  We'll also get a wrap-up of the Lake Run and a feel for how much money LOWC might be able to give away this year!
Please attend this 7:00 pm meeting at Consigning Women (a high-end consignment shop owned my LOWC member, Stephanie Sparkman). Consigning Women is located at 1235 McVey in Lake Oswego. Also, please remember this meeting includes a diaper-drive for Dinner & a Movie! Hope to see you there!

Lake Run Update

The 2012 Lake Run has officially ended and we couldn't be more proud of the amazing team that made this day a success. In addition to the beautiful weather, we are grateful for all of the LOWC members who came out to support our clubs biggest fundraising event. We could not have done it without you.
This year we added the new PACKET PICKUP PARTY on Friday night. There has already been lots of positive feedback and support for having this again next year.

Thank you to the following LOWC members for all of your efforts:

Brenda Smith, Diana Del Garbino, Cammie Ware, Kari Borgen, Tracy Freeman, Carrie Laird, Aggie Casebeer, Holly Windler Scerbo, Emily Higman, Cassandra Bauccio, Laura Mittelstadt, and Chandra Terry.

Clip those Diaper Coupons!

We are doing a diaper drive for “dinner and a movie” on May 17th at the general meeting
Dinner & A Movie is a nonprofit organization that provides abuse-recovery mentoring to youth and young adults who are victims of child abuse and neglect with the goal of facilitating the emotional healing needed to transform their broken lives.  They are in desperate need of diapers so PLEASE everyone bring at least one box or bag of diapers to the May 17th meeting.  You will receive an email before the meeting with the sizes they are in need of the most.  Thank you for your help!

Scholarship Update

The LOWC Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the winners of our 2012 Outstanding Community Service scholarships.  HyeNa Oh and Natalie Hamachek from Lake Oswego High School will be awarded $2000 each.  Mackenzie Larson of West Linn High School will be awarded $1000.  HyeNa co-founded the LOHS Key Club (Community Service club), has served in many leadership positions in her church youth organization and is a personal tutor and mentor to immigrant students.  Natalie organizes and runs a camp each summer for children with Downs Syndrome/Autism and is an active YoungLife leader and NCL member.  Mackenzie is an outstanding leader in her church’s youth ministry and is passionate about counseling kids to express themselves in song and dance through various camp experiences.  Congratulations to our scholarship winners!  We commend them on their continued commitment to community service.
Special thanks to Kris Coder and Andrea Burroughs for their work as scholarship subcommittee members.

Grant Update

By the numbers....11 grant application invitations went out, ten completed applications came back to us.  Eight site visits were conducted by committee members.  Six nonprofits made the final cut.  This is why we work so hard all year long - to raise money for local nonprofits who serve women and children in need.  The Grant Subcommittee is proud to submit recommendations for six nonprofits to receive grants from LOWC in 2012.  The Board has reviewed the recommendations and voted to support these six great organizations focused on supporting women and children in need. Now the vote goes to the general membership at our quorum meeting on May 17th.   Please be sure to attend the May meeting in order to learn more about these six agencies and have your vote counted.

Special thanks to Grant Subcommittee members Kris Coder, Becky Campbell, Natalie Friis, Andrea Burroughs, Amanda Anderson who conducted research, attended site visits, participated in meetings and put in the hard work necessary to come up with these grant recommendations.

Thank you to all Philanthropy Committee members for a great year (Lisa Mackin is not mentioned above but you may recall she was a whirling dervish in putting together philanthropy representation at the Home Tour). Ladies, good work!

Friend Raiser

It’s that time of year again…Friend Raiser Time!

We have three Friend Raising events planned and the big kick off takes place at Sharon Mirarchi’s home at 6:30 pm on Thursday, June the 28th.  Ingrid Smith will be hosting the event on July the 28th (time TBD) and the final event of the season will be at Kathleen Ellman’s home on Saturday, September the 8th (time TBD).  Start digging deep into your Rolodex (does anyone even have those anymore) and share with all the ladies you know about your club and let’s have a repeat year of well attended Friend Raisers.  All Board members are asked to attend the Friend Raisers HOWEVER, you too can join in on the fun even if you aren’t bringing a friend.

The Membership Committee and the Board have agreed that this year we will approach our new members differently and do more to encourage their active involvement in our club. To that point, some of the current active members will be teamed up with a Provisional from this year AND a Provisional from this upcoming year as a “Big Sister”.  Our hope is that each Big Sister will play an active role with the newer members and invite them to attend meetings and maybe even go to the meetings/socials and community service events together.  Wouldn’t we all have loved to have had that type of hand reached out to us when we first joined? Imagine what that could mean to our new members?!  So, if you are approached to be a Big Sister, please accept the request with the enthusiasm it deserves.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Happy Hours and Coffee Socials

Upcoming Social Events
I hope you are all enjoying spring in Oregon.  We certainly have seen all kinds of weather this year but I am ready for warm sunshine, beautiful flowers in the yards, and boats on the lake.  Along with that I love outdoor Happy Hour!  Our next Happy Hour is Wednesday May 9th at Manzana’s followed later in the month with morning Coffee at Chuck’s Place on May 30th.  I really do hope you will try and make one or both of these social events as a way to wrap up our year and at the same time share ideas with what you’d like to see our club do socially next year.  I am always open for suggestions and truly appreciate the input.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Blog Feedback

Let me know what you think of the new blog.  I do not plan to create the LOWC Newsletter in the traditional PDF format for the 2012-2013 year, so I thought I would try to simplify the newsletter creation process. The blog is much more streamlined.

I CAN include photos in the blog. I just haven't RECEIVED photos to add.  If you have any photos of LOWC events, please send them to me and I'll happily include them.
